Welcoming C-V2X in the United States after FCC’s ruling

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) fundamentally changed the vehicle communications (C-ITS) market in the US by restructuring the 5.9 GHz band. The industry must go forward on a narrowed spectrum with Cellular V2X or C-V2X technology instead of the widely used Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC). The changes announced pave the way for progress, eliminating the uncertainty caused by competing technologies.

Commsignia has always been supporting both C-V2X and DSRC and is well prepared to help the US market go down this newly designated path. Road operators and cities can focus on their primary missions, saving lives and making transportation more efficient, while we at Commsignia deliver the best technologies and services needed to achieve these goals.

For those who have DSRC systems up and running we’re ensuring a smooth transition to C-V2X. Those who use our dual-mode equipment are in a unique position to solve this problem with a mere software upgrade at no significant cost. Our C-V2X offer includes ITS-RS4-M ver:C roadside units (RSU) for cities and road operators and ITS-OB4-M ver:C onboard units (OBU) for fleets to deploy V2X services in the US.

We’re participating in setting up the C-V2X certification processes with OmniAir to rigorously test our devices because standardization and certification is in our corporate DNA.

This is a significant milestone for the industry, and we believe that with the uncertainty removed from the industry, deployments will speed up allowing V2X technology to take off.

However with this change various customers are facing the need to switch from their existing devices to C-V2X. For this we provide assistance and specialized solutions, to make sure this transition period is a smooth experience for all involved: decisionmakers, operators, and those using the technology day by day.

Details of FCC’s November 18, 2020 decision:

The FCC allocated 45 MHz of the 5,9 GHz band to unlicensed devices, vehicle communication remained on the upper 30 MHz. C-ITS users have to vacate this lower part of the band within one year of the effective date of the First Report and Order, and leave behind DSRC within 2 years in the remaining band designated to C-ITS.

Commsignia Roadside Unit OmniAir Certified

Commsignia, a market leader in V2X technology, has announced achieving the OmniAir Certificate for its ITS-RS4 Roadside Unit. The certification issued by OmniAir Consortium, the leading industry association promoting interoperability and certification for connected vehicles, ITS, and transportation payment systems, confirms that the device conforms to industry protocol standards and specifications. OmniAir’s certification program provides third-party qualified accredited laboratory testing and validation of DSRC-based V2X devices and test tools. This certification is for DSRC based operation, but the ITS-RS4 is a unit that is capable of both DSRC and C-V2X operation that can be reconfigured runtime – ensuring compliancy with potential regulatory changes.

“We were the first to receive OmniAir’s Certification for a V2X device back in 2018, and we are now again proud to have acquired this most important proof of complying with standards and protocols for our latest generation of Roadside Units, and to be able to offer assurance to our partners. The V2X market is about to take off, and interoperability and conformance is an enabler to build up the connected car ecosystem, paving the way towards autonomy” – said László Virág, CTO of Commsignia. “We see this certification are an absolute must to create trust towards not only the Commsignia devices but the whole V2X industry.”

Congratulations to Commsignia for earning its second OmniAir Certification, which is not an easy feat,” said Jason Conley, Executive Director for OmniAir.  “OmniAir only awards certification to trusted communications devices, and is relied on by infrastructure owner-operators around the world in deploying V2X technologies.

The ITS-RS4 Roadside Unit

The ITS-RS4 is a DSRC and C-V2X enabled V2X Roadside Unit that acts as a robust future proof edge communication platform for sensor data exchange. Featuring a high-performance application processor, it actively supports the deployment of 5G and autonomous driving by allowing the smooth deployment of edge computing applications for transportation. At the heart of the unit lies the Commsignia Software Stack and Intelligent Transportation System Middleware that power the simultaneous perception and data delivery to all road users.  Applications running on the platform help optimize traffic management use cases by connecting applications to traffic cameras, traffic light controllers, sensors, and V2X connected vehicles, as well as vulnerable road users.

The ITS-RS4 roadside units

The ITS-RS4 acts as a local hub for sensor data exchange as well as a service/application platform that can be used to enhance the safety of all road users and help optimize traffic management. It gathers information from the surrounding environment such as traffic cameras, traffic light controllers, sensors and V2X connected vehicles – cars, motor-cycles and even bicycles. A powerful Deep Neural Network / GPU accelerated Artificial Intelligence processor creates a real-time representation of the information to create a dynamic model of the environment.

The ITS-OB4 onboard units

The fourth generation of Commsignia’s vehicular connectivity system offers superior performance coupled with V2X Software stack. The unit provides low-cost and easy OEM / aftermarket integration, offering built in Tamper-proof Hardware Security Module, CAN, high range V2X radio and easy HMI integration. By combining the benefits of automotive grade design, high performance application CPU and dual channel V2X radio performance, the ITS-OB4 offers a professional, complete and future proof solution.

Commsignia Introduces New Dual-Radio Roadside Unit

Commsignia’s RSU helps to address this, serving as an industry-first solution to ease the challange that providers or integrators are facing when deciding on which technology to deploy. The RSU connects DSRC and C-V2X communication technologies, expanding remote perception of connected and non-connected road objects. Therefore a more detailed coverage of the road environment can be achieved, as the Dual Active RSU can integrate perceptions coming from both the C-V2X or the DSRC-based network, and feed it to all V2X-capable vehicles. It also represents a prudent approach to which infrastructure to deploy as automakers are finalizing their plans for connected car.
